5 Tips for Choosing Your Bridal Makeup

Congratulations, you’re getting married! Time to plan the biggest day of your life: your wedding. After you’ve selected the perfect dress and booked a venue, you probably will begin to think about your beauty regime for the day. Will you want an up-do or a natural style? Veil or no veil? And what do you want your makeup to look like?

Many brides book a makeup artist for the big day. Other brides may ask a friend to style their makeup or do it themselves, depending on the wedding budget, their desired style and their comfort with letting someone else handle their cosmetics. Whichever option you choose, here are some important tips for your bridal look:

#1. Do a Test Run.

Whether you hire a makeup artist or go the DIY route, be sure to do a full application of your makeup before the big day arrives. If you plan to get a fake tan, do so before the trial so that you can make sure the foundation matches what your skin tone will be.

#2. Know What You Want.

This is your day, after all. If you are working with a professional makeup artist, be willing to hear their suggestions, especially if it’s about something like a color match for your skin tone or an idea of how to brighten your eyes. But ultimately, don’t let trends or friends make you get a look you’re uncomfortable with.

#3. Don’t Neglect Your Eyes.

Brighten them, use waterproof mascara (you will need it!), and consider using eyelash extensions. They have a subtler look than a full strip of false lashes, and allow you to fill in gaps easier. Don’t forget your eyebrows, either! Go for subtler eyeshadow, though–heavier applications can make your eyes look shadowed in pictures.

#4. Don’t Just Apply On Your Face.

Depending on the style of your dress, you may want to extend your foundation and/or bronzer down over your neck and shoulders to ensure that both the color and texture of your skin is consistent in pictures. Just be careful not to apply it where it could stain your dress!

#5. Don’t Rush.

Allow around an hour for makeup application the day of the wedding. The last thing you would want is to underestimate how long it will take and end up cramped for time, stressed or with a sloppy look.

Most importantly, make sure that you feel beautiful and take a moment to soak in the day. Every bride deserves that!

It’s summertime–time to hit the sand and surf. And hey, you’re on vacation, so some of your beauty regimen will definitely take a back seat. However, it is really important to follow good hair and skin care while you’re out in the sun.

Sun damage is real and should not be taken lightly. A sunburn is painful for a few days, but the sun can create long-term damage to your skin and your hair. The sun, the sand, the salt, and the chlorine from the pool can add up to lots of damage.

Hydrate

It’s not just what you put on your face that counts. Hydration plumps up your skin from the inside, so make sure you’re drinking plenty of water. Remember, you’re in the sun for hours a day, so you’re sweating a lot more.

Moisturize

Your skin loses more moisture when you’re out in the sun, so moisturize your face more often—at least two times a day. Try to use a potion with hyaluronic acid if you have really dry skin, and try to use your own products rather than the hotel samples. Cleanse your face really well before applying moisturizer to remove all the sunscreen, grit and grime of your beach day so that your moisturizer is really working rather than just sitting on top of other ingredients.

Avoid the Spa

Many spa owners advise skipping a facial when you’re on vacation, especially if it is your first one. If there’s peer pressure because everyone is getting facials, avoid having any deep treatments like exfoliation or peels. Instead, get a facial when you return. A deep clean will remove dead cells and clear away the gunky sunscreen from your pores, and a green mask will hydrate and calm the skin.

Forever Sunscreen

No matter how well you tan, or how much time you’ve already spent in the sun, you should ALWAYS wear sunscreen—no matter what! Apply it generously to your skin to cover all areas. At the beach, a waterproof, sweatproof sunscreen is recommended. They’re made with zinc or titanium and are generally less oily and greasy than traditional sunscreens. Your hotel might provide sunscreen, but dermatologists say to bring your own so you know exactly what you’re getting.

Wear a Hat

You probably spent hours deciding what to pack, and that cute little hat might be in your suitcase, but when it comes to the sun, your hat has to have a purpose. Oh, and if you’re hitting the pool, don’t forget a swim cap. It’s the best thing to protect from chlorine, and hey, they really do look pretty cool.

Makeup

Wear the same makeup you usually wear, but add a base layer of a cream or powder that has SPF in it.

Hair

We all do it. We get our hair cut right before vacation so we’ll look great. But many hairstylists say to wait. You don’t know how your hair might react to all the humidity and salt water, so it’s best to hold off. A short haircut that is low maintenance is okay to do beforehand. Hotels may not have the greatest shampoos and conditioners, so pack your own travel sizes. It’s actually a great time to experiment with your hair. Go more natural rather than spending time straightening and styling. Avoid getting highlights before going to the beach; it’s best to let the sun work its magic with natural highlights. But no matter what you do, always make sure to moisturize your hair on a beach vacation. When you’re back home, use intensive moisture hair products with coconut or jojoba oil—these products moisturize and they great tropical smell will remind you of the beach.

Skin allergies can make it very difficult to wear makeup, use skincare products, or to add cool enhancements like eyelashes. Skin reactions like dryness, erosion and bumps can wreak havoc. If you have skin allergies irritated by makeup and skin care products, these seven beauty tips may help you.

1) Test new products

Try out new products before you use them regularly. Test a spot on your arm with the makeup or beauty product to see if there is a reaction. If it is clear after 72 hours, you should be okay to proceed. If not, use another product.

2) Use mild products

If you are a frequent allergy sufferer it is important that you treat your skin gently. If you over apply cleansers, toners, lotions or other treatments, it can increase irritation. Choose a mild cleanser or moisturizer when making your skin care purchases.

3) Throw away old product

You may not realize it, but your makeup has an expiration date. You should throw away mascara three months after opening. You have some more time on foundation and concealer – it will last for up to 18 months and eye pencils for up to two years. Failing to toss old makeup can irritate skin prone to contact dermatitis.

4) Review your product ingredients

If you have frequent skin allergies after applying makeup or skincare products, you may want to review the ingredients. It is more than likely that you have an allergy to one of them. Sometimes you may not even realize a product contains something you are allergic too. Shea butter, for example, can cause reactions to people who have nut allergies.

5) Moisturize your skin naturally

Skin affected by allergies can get dry and irritated. It is best to keep the area as dry as possible and moisturize with a nice, rich oil. Coconut oil is a great moisturizer of dry and inflamed nostrils. Other excellent moisturizers include shea butter and grapeseed oil.

6) Protect your skin from pollen

If your skin is significantly puffy, you can hide behind a pair of sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat. The real benefit of this trick is not hiding but in preventing pollen from getting into your eyes and triggering more allergy symptoms. As an added bonus, your skin can get some sun protection.

7) Hide red, itchy eyes

When your allergies are flaring up, your eyes can get red, itchy and burn. You may use short-term solutions like artificial tears or prescription eye drops, but it can affect your eye makeup. When you have red, itchy eyes it is best minimize your eye makeup. Avoid any more than two swipes of mascara. You can also use waterproof mascara to avoid running with tears.
