Post-Summer Skin Care Tips

You may have had a marvelous time this summer in Sonoma County relaxing by the pool with a frozen margarita, frolicking along a glittering beach, or traveling overseas to explore a new city. The season finally ended and you are left with a great tan and freckled cheeks, and everyone now wants to know where you had been and what your secret is for such a gorgeous glow. 

Just because you look amazing on the outside does not mean that underneath that sun-kissed look, things are not wreaking havoc on your epidermis. All of those days with chlorine, tequila, and sunlight can be harsh on your skin

Having fun in the sun is alright in moderation and with the use of proper sunscreen. The sun does have its benefits and so does traveling and socializing during a sizzling summer day. However, with the huge risk of premature aging and skin cancer, one can never be too careful.

After the summer hype has faded, you may start to notice that your fresh sunny glow does as well. Your skin may feel parched, start to peel, and you may start to notice an uneven skin tone. Fortunately, there are ways in which you can counter some of the damage done while you were living life this summer.

  • Microdermabrasion: This is often not recommended during the summer months since a layer of your epidermis is scrubbed off using a diamond tip, exposing your sensitive skin. Although, getting microdermabrasion done a few times post-summer can be a treat and leave your skin soft, supple, and continue that glow you are looking for. With regular use, microdermabrasion can even help reduce sun spots. 
  • Deep Clean Those Pores: After months of mixing sweat with makeup, along with whatever else may be in the air or water, pores often get clogged up with lots of gunk, especially if you were not proactive regarding your skin care throughout the summer. The American Academy of Dermatology suggests doing the following: use non-comedogenic products on your face, wash with warm water twice a day, use sunscreen, apply retinol, treat acne diligently, exfoliate regularly, and be gentle with your skin. The very best ingredients for clogged pores are retinol, salicylic acid, alpha hydroxy acid, zinc, charcoal, and clay. 
  • Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize!: Sun and heat can dramatically dry out your skin, making you look older than you really are by enhancing fine lines and wrinkles, taking away that supple look and feel, as well as by causing your skin to peel or flake. You can start your post-sun, skin care routine by jumping into a cool shower and drinking loads of H2O. Products made with aloe, vitamin A, C, and E, and zinc are the most beneficial in producing collagen, moisturizing, and giving that wanted glow. Don’t forget to moisturize day and night and don’t leave your eyes and lips out of the equation.
