With the rise in cancer inducing pesticides and the identification of questionable growth and farming practices, including GMO products and harmful chemicals, many are opting for healthier eating solutions by going the organic route. Organic products have become a part of an ever-increasing “health conscious” trend and it looks like organic products are here to stay.
While the market has grown for both organic farmers and consumers the gap is widening for successful organic farmers. Farmers must adhere to strict restrictions and procedures set by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA). The coveted organic label is not an easy one to acquire. A farmer must meet certain requirements in order to wear the ‘organic’ label, which is quite beneficial for the customer. Consumers are seeking foods that have not been given growth enhancements, hormones and produce that have not been sprayed with pesticides.
Circumvent Chemicals There are many benefits to jumping on the organic train, one of which is organic foods are grown without pesticides, which have not been tested for the long-term effect they have on humans. The FDA has nearly 600 registered chemicals on record for agriculture usage. Synthetic materials such as ammonia are absorbed into the soil of chemically treated produce.
Absorb More Nutrients Organically grown fruits and vegetables provide more nutrients than vegetables grown in non-organic environments and many say that they taste better as well. The nutrient rich soil that comes with cultivating organic produce contributes to the crisp and unique taste of some vegetables.
Dodge the GMOs The best way to avoid genetically modified organisms (GMO) is to purchase organic foods. Genetically modified foods do not have to be labeled as such so you could be purchasing foods that have been genetically modified. Over 60 countries including Japan and the entire European Union have banned the production and sale of genetically modified organisms.
Avoid the Hormones Hormones are injected into the meat and dairy that we consume. These hormones are given to the animal to speed the growth process. Antibodies are also dangerous toxin, which is added to the feed of the meat we consume. The meat and dairy that we then consume from these animals is also laden with antibodies. These toxins along with hormones cause rapid growth in children and an early onset of puberty. Many argue that these antibodies are actually harmful because they build up a defense against medications, which are intended to cure.
