What are the benefits of peels?
Peels can have numerous benefits and are usually conducted in a series of treatments. From improving the texture of the skin to increasing cell turnover, peels rejuvenate your face. Peels can help reduce fine lines as well as wrinkles caused by sun damage and aging. What is a chemical peel?
A chemical peel involves applying a solution of alpha hydroxy acids, trichloroacetic acids or phenol to the client’s skin – typically the face. The solutions range from light to deep strength and are applied to the skin for a set time, penetrating the layers of skin and breaking the bonds that hold them together. The acid is washed off with water, leaving the skin looking red. Over the next few days to months, depending on the strength of the peel, the redness will be accompanied by shedding and peeling skin. As the new, healthy skin grows in, clients have seen improvements in the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, blemishes and spots, scars, acne, and much more.

What are the types of chemical peels?
● Light chemical peels use alpha hydroxy acid, or fruit acids, like glycolic, lactic, and citric acid, to treat a pre-set number of the top layers of skin. These are ideal for minor skin blemishes. Recovery time can be about a week, during which time patients may have red, peeling skin. Results are expected after that week, but may not be drastic; some patients repeat light peels several times to get their desired results because of the shorter recovery time.
● Medium facial peels using trichloroacetic acids are right in the middle, giving relief from fine wrinkles, superficial blemishes, and pigmentation problems. Recovery may take slightly longer than a light peel but can also leave longer results.
● Deep chemical peels use phenols to create a much stronger solution that gives more drastic results. Ideal for clients with deep pockets of scars, coarse wrinkles, and pre-cancerous growths, deep chemical peels are often on a patient’s skin much longer. For the first week of recovery, patients often look like they’ve had a severe sunburn; redness could last up to three months – but the results could last one to two years.

The Basic Kitchen Exfoliant

Baking soda can replace many harsh and toxic household cleaners and apparently store bought skin exfoliant when combined with sea salt which will exfoliate. Take half a teaspoon of salt and one teaspoon of baking soda. If your skin is sensitive, you can add some olive oil to soothe inflammation and irritation.

Oats, Honey, and Apple Vinegar Exfoliant

Who knew that oats and honey could make more than a satisfying breakfast? Two to three teaspoons of ground raw oats and honey with a fourth of a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar creates an adventurous exfoliant that will leave your skin feeling fresh and anew. The amount of honey depends on how sticky you want the mix. The vinegar smooths it out. You can add a drop of basil oil or tea tree oil to quicken the healing process.

Oatmeal, Honey, and Egg White Mask

One cup of plain oatmeal combined with half a cup of honey and one egg will create an intense pasty textured exfoliant that will hydrate the skin. Next time you’re preparing a bowl of oatmeal, put some aside for your next homemade facial.

Argan Oil Exfoliant

Arian oil is a lightweight oil made from the Moroccan Aegean tree. It has restorative and age-defying effects, and it deeply hydrates hair, nails, and skin. Like the recipes as mentioned above, it is also edible, as it can replace olive oil in your favorite vinaigrette. In this instance, can add a few drops of the oil to one teaspoon of crushed almonds, half a teaspoon of honey, half a teaspoon of milk, and half a teaspoon of tomato juice to create an amazing Homemade skin exfoliant.

Cucumber and Avocado Exfoliant

Not only does the combination of cucumbers and avocados make an excellent salad, but it is also good for face masks as they contain soothing oils and hydrating elements. Mix it with strawberries, honey, oatmeal or ground almonds to create a viscous skin exfoliant and probably a delicious smoothie. Try concocting a combination of a fourth a cup of grated cucumber, diced avocado, and one of the previously mentioned ingredients.

Application

Once you’ve mixed your ingredients, apply it in a circular motion and let it sit for about 15 minutes then rinse it off with cold water to close your pores. Afterwards, use a good moisturizer or sunscreen to lock in that moisture. Please be advised not to use the other exfoliants more than three days a week. If used excessively, your skin will dry out.

It’s also the organ that takes the most abuse: scrapes, cuts, rashes, burns; your skin is subjected to a lot. Fortunately, there are many products and procedures out there that can help your skin be as healthy as possible. From lotions and oils to facials and waxes, there are many ways to keep your epidermis in tip-top shape. As Estheticians, it’s our job to make sure that you take care of your skin through a variety of treatments.

What is skin?

In order to understand the best way to keep your skin clean and healthy, you need to understand what makes up your outer layer. The skin is made up of three distinct levels: the subcutaneous tissue, the dermis, and the epidermis. Within these layers are a variety of different components that have important purposes. Such as sweat glands, hair follicles, muscles, and nerves. Without skin, a lot of what we experience in the world would not be possible.
