Modern beauty standards demand long, luscious lashes. Celebrities from Beyoncé, to Zooey Deschanel, to Taylor Swift, sport false eyelashes. There are a variety of materials to choose from, as well, depending on the look you are trying to achieve. If you want to have Beyoncé’s dramatic look, go for mink fur lashes. Mink is the finest and makes for the full, dramatic eye-pop that most celebrities are trying to achieve. Additionally, you can choose from sable, silk, and other synthetic fibers, just ask a specialist at your favorite salon. But before you run out the door, here are five things you might not know about getting extensions for your baby blues.

1. Change in your beauty routine. The addition of false eyelashes will definitely alter your beauty routine. Most women find that it’s for the better, however. With false eyelashes, you won’t need to worry about putting on your mascara every day. Just go about the rest of your routine with the added bonus you won’t need to apply any mascara, saving you a few minutes every day. And even better, this means you don’t have to worry about getting that mascara off at night! Even with the best makeup remover, mascara is always a pain to take off.

2. They last for about 2 months. Most false eyelashes, when cared for correctly, will last you a good 6-to-8 weeks. That means almost two full months where you don’t have to think about mascara, and with the added flair to your eyes, you likely will find yourself leaving off even more of your usual makeup routine because your eyes are doing all the work for you.

3. Repeated extensions can lead to lash loss. It can be fairly traumatic for your eyelids and natural lashes to constantly have new lashes glued over the top. You may want to give your lids and lashes a break in between getting full new sets when your old set has worn off, particularly if you have had them on for several months. Every few months, just take a break for a couple weeks before you go back to get new lashes.

4. Your look will change depending on the material. As mentioned above, eyelash extensions come in synthetic fibers, sable, silk, mink, and synthetic mink. The look you are going for will determine the material you get, as will the price. As you might imagine, mink extensions are a little more pricey than regular synthetics. If you want the Beyoncé pop!, go for mink. If you are looking for something a little less dramatic, think Zooey Deschanel in New Girl, go for a simple 6mm synthetic fiber. Lashes vary in thickness and length, from 6mm to 17mm, giving you a fantastic range to choose from.

5. Allergic reactions are possible! Just like with any beauty product, eyelash extensions require glue which can irritate your eyes. So, see if you can schedule a quick drop by with your salon to test out a few different glues on your skin to see how it will react. This is just like how you are supposed to test some of your box hair dye on your arm before dyeing your whole head.
